It’s been about 20 years since Magic Johnson came out and admitted his HIV infection to the press. The reaction to that headliner has since served as his motivator for his new upcoming cause, in which the NBA legend is trying to reel in the Hip Hop community to go against our country’s issues with homophobia. It’s a new proposition that I find interesting when you consider that Rap music tends to promote it homophobia here and again, so we’ll see how this goes over. AIDS, on the other hand, is not often mentioned.
“What we’re trying to do is reach out to the Hip-Hop community because they have power — power with their voice, power with that mic in their hand and power with the lyrics that they sing,” Magic Johnson said to The Huffington Post. He also went on to mention that he currently has close contact with a range of Hip Hop executives and artists, but he did not list any names. Through this, he wants to bring together several collective fanbases so that he may have his own ‘army’ behind him. In fact, he even detailed how he also wishes to get support from other sports stars as well.
“We’re going to come out next year with everybody and we’ll have a nice big press conference and what we’re going to do, what our plan is, because it’s so important that we rally — not just them, either,” Magic said. “I need the Hip-Hop community but I also need the basketball players and football players. We need a little bit of everybody, so that’s what we’re working on now.”
So there you go. Let’s see if Johnson can work his ‘magic’ on the world and suppress homophobia.
